SHAMEEM RAFIK-GALEA is presently a full Professor at SEGi University, Malaysia and was previously at Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) until her retirement in 2017. She is presently the President of the Malaysian Association of Applied Linguistics (MAAL) and the Chair of the AILA 2024 World Congress. Her area of academic specialization ranges from English for Specific Purposes, Applied linguistics, ELT teacher education, Psychology and workplace communication. Shameem has researched extensively over the years and presented numerous keynote, plenary and featured papers at national and international conferences in the area of English Language teaching and teacher education, Thinking Skills, English for Specific Purposes, English in the Workplace including Health Communication. Her other interests are in the area of Sociolinguistics and Discourse studies. In her capacity as an academic, Shameem has supervised a large number of Master’s and PhD students in her area of interests and expertise. Shameem remains active in academia, researching, publishing, giving talks and workshops and continues to present papers and organizing conferences in her area of interest. Her most recent publication is on Instructor verbal immediacy in the EFL classroom in Forum for Linguistic Studies and Translation and psychometric evaluation of Smartphone Addiction Scale—Short Version (SAS-SV) among Chinese college students in PLoS One 17.
