Azirah Hashim is Emeritus Professor at the Faculty of Languages and Linguistics, Universiti Malaya, Malaysia. Her roles at the university have included Executive Director of the Asia-Europe Institute, Director of the Centre for ASEAN Regionalism, Dean of the Humanities Research Cluster and Dean of the Faculty of Languages and Linguistics. She is on the editorial and advisory board of several journals such as English Today, World Englishes, International Journal of Applied Linguistics, Asian Journal of Applied Linguistics, Journal of Intercultural Communication and GEMA Journal of Language Studies and Chief Editor of the ASEAN Journal of Applied Linguistics. She is a member of the steering group for the ASEAN Higher Education Community of Practice, RIHED-SHARE and standing working group of the Asia-Europe Meeting (ASEM) Education. She is the current President of the International Association of Applied Linguistics (AILA). She was a recipient of the prestigious Humboldt Fellowship from the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation, Germany and appointed Humboldt Ambassador Scientist. Other awards include the Marie S. Curie Fellowship in Germany and the Trinity Long Room Hub Fellowship in Ireland. In 2023, she was awarded Honorary membership of the Linguistic Society of the Philippines for distinguished contribution to research in language and linguistics. She was also elected Fellow of the Academy of Sciences Malaysia in the same year.
