Professor Wang Zuankai

Chair Professor, Department of Mechanical Engineering,
City University of Hong Kong (CityU)
HONG KONG

Professor Wang is the founding member of the Young Academy of Science of Hong Kong, Fellow of the International Society of Bionic Engineering and Changjiang Chair Professor awarded by the Ministry of Education of China. He has won many awards including the Xplorer Prize (2020), Hiwin Outstanding Doctoral Dissertation Supervisor Award (Silver, 2019), World Cultural Council Special Recognition Award (2018), Outstanding Youth Award from the International Society of Bionic Engineering (2016), Outstanding Research Award (2017) and President’s Lectureship at City University of Hong Kong (2018, 2020). He has made seminal contributions to surface science and engineering, especially on innovating new materials, mechanisms, and manufacturing techniques for the water-energy nexus. His work on droplet impact was recognized as a Guinness world record and was featured as one of 15 favourite papers over 15 years of publications selected by Nature Physics editors. He achieved a major breakthrough by solving a 256-year challenge in thermal management. He is also the inventor of the Droplet-based Electricity Generator (Nature in 2020), which provides a paradigm shift in how water energy can be collected. He has published more than 180 papers in Nature, Science and other peer-reviewed journals.
