Presentation 1: AppliedHE™, The New Kid on the Block

An introduction to the AppliedHE™ (“Applied Higher Education”) as a concept, organisation and our approach to higher education quality improvement and promotion. AppliedHE™ bridges the gap between universities, students and employers by delivering innovative higher education evaluation, branding and networking solutions. The relevance of the AppliedHE™ concept and services to global university rankings, higher education internationalisation, quality improvement, industry collaboration and student recruitment are emphasized.

Presentation 2: EMI: lessons for the future

For centuries all teaching at European universities was in Latin but with strengthening nationalism this was replaced by national languages. Some three decades ago prof Maurits van Rooijen initiated a reversed policy using English as the new Lingua Franca, initially at the Erasmus University Rotterdam in the Netherlands. Later at Leiden University he introduced the rule that at least at postgraduate level all teaching would be in English unless there was a compelling case why this could not be done (eg degree programmes in Dutch literature or Dutch Law).

The reasons to do so:

  1. boost to employability of graduates
  2. Attract more talented students and boost diversity in the classroom
  3. Attract high potentials and talent from a wider global pool and enhance the reputation of the
    University

This presentation will introduce some ‘lessons learned’ from past initiatives to introduce EMI.

Presentation 3: AppliedHE™ Ratings: JOB-Ready, ENGLISH-Ready and ONLINE-Ready

An introduction to the AppliedHE™ JOB-Ready, ENGLISH-Ready and ONLINE-Ready Rating systems. JOB-Ready is an all-round international evaluation system based on stakeholder opinions (employers, alumni, students, faculty and peer faculty) that measures the quality of an institution against criteria that are most relevant to students, employers, government and other social actors. ENGLISH-Ready evaluates the prevalence, quality and support system of English-taught programs in non-English speaking countries, enabling institutions to benchmark themselves internationally and better market themselves to international students. ONLINE-Ready evaluates the quality of online learning against a set of global best-practices.
